Don’t make referrals feel awkward

Asking for referrals or reviews from former customers can sometimes feel awkward, but fear not! After talking to many reps who have asked for thousands of referrals, here's how to do it:

1. Put the ask upfront: Don't beat around the bush, be upfront about your intention to ask for a referral or review. Include it right at the top of your email or conversation. For example, "Hey, how are things? Before we dive into catching up, I have a favor to ask..."

2. Authentic small talk: After making the referral request, break the ice with some authentic small talk. Don't try to hide or sidestep the referral request, as customers are smart and can see through it. Embrace the awkwardness and then transition into a genuine conversation about how they are doing and what has changed since your last interaction.

Asking for referrals or reviews from former customers doesn't have to be awkward. You can ease the awkwardness and make the conversation more enjoyable by being upfront, authentic, and confident and injecting some comedic voice into your request. Remember, customers appreciate honesty and genuine interactions, so don't be afraid to embrace the awkwardness and make your referral requests with comedic confidence!
